60 Years of ERT: The Television That Grew Up With Greece
In 2026, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) marks a monumental
milestone: 60 years since Greece?s first official television broadcast. More
than just a TV network, ERT has served as a mirror to Greek society?documenting
our history, shaping our culture, and connecting generations of Greeks across
the globe.
A Journey Through the Airwaves
The story began on February 23, 1966, when the first flickering black-and-white
images transformed Greek households forever. Since that historic night, ERT has
evolved through several distinct eras:
-
1966?1980s: The Formative Years ? From the early black-and-white days to the
vibrant expansion of color television, ERT became the primary window to the
world.
-
1990s?2000s: Modernization ? A period of intense competition with private
broadcasters that pushed ERT to modernize its programming and technical
infrastructure.
-
2010s?Today: The Digital Renaissance ? The successful transition to
high-definition, multi-platform news, and the groundbreaking launch of ERTFLIX.
Why ERT Remains Essential
For six decades, ERT has provided a unique service that commercial stations
cannot replicate. Its legacy is built on three main pillars:
-
Trusted Information: As a primary news source, it has covered every election,
national crisis, and historic milestone with the gravity a public broadcaster
demands.
-
Culture & Entertainment: ERT has been the ultimate patron of the arts,
promoting Greek music and theatre, producing iconic scripted series, and
preserving the nation's cultural heritage through its vast audiovisual archive.
-
Educational Impact: From legendary children?s programs to deep-dive
documentaries, ERT has combined learning with entertainment for three
generations of viewers.
The Streaming Revolution: ERT in the Digital Era
Today, ERT isn't just looking backward; it's leading the way forward. The
launch of ERTFLIX has revolutionized how Greeks consume public content,
offering a world-class streaming experience that competes with international
giants. Whether it?s through international broadcasting for the Greek diaspora
or 24-hour news coverage, the broadcaster remains more relevant than ever.
"The story of ERT is, in many ways, the story of modern Greece ? and its next
chapter is already unfolding."
Celebrating the Legacy
As we celebrate this 60th anniversary, ERT honors the people behind the cameras
and the viewers in front of them with special tributes and archival
retrospectives. It is a time to remember the golden era of Greek TV series and
look forward to the future of public broadcasting.
ERT Historical Timeline at a Glance
| Era | Key Milestones |
| 1966 | First official TV broadcast in Greece. |
| 1970s-80s | Expansion of national reach and the arrival of Color TV. |
| 1987 | Launch of ERT3, focusing on regional development and Northern Greece. |
| 2020 | Launch of ERTFLIX, bringing public TV into the streaming age. |
| 2026 | 60th Anniversary celebrations and digital transformation. |

** COLOMBIA. Further discussion of the signal on 1100.28 which we have
been logging as HJAT, Caracol in Barranquilla, but could it be R.

``Hi Glenn, I saw in WOR this about "Radio Angulo" that after
listening to the clip I heard "Caracol Radio". I asked Mauricio Molano
about his opinion. This is what he writes: 73 Fredrik Dour?n,
Borl?nge, Sweden``
``Hi Mauricio, I ask about your opinion of this tip. Caracol Radio has
been observed several times on 1100.28. On Jorma M?ntyl?'s clip there
is something that sound as "Radio Angulo" at 16 seconds, but in the
very end of the clip I also hear "la hora Caracol Radio". Could he say
something other than Radio Angulo? 73 Fredrik Dour?n, Sweden``
``Hi Fredrik, I think it is a promo for some Caracol program. He don?t
says "Angulo" but "en vivo"... "radio en vivo"... "live radio". 73!

** NORTH AMERICA. Some pertinent comments about the 9025 station we
are hearing, from Terry L. Krueger, NW Florida:
``9025 PIRATE/MUTANT (NORTH AMERICA) 'Presidential Pirate' 1528+ 9 FEB
2026 Tune in to JFK inaugural socialist quote snip "... ask not what
your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country."
Into FDR inauguration snip (but which one?) from radio reel archives
with fragments of a male radio host, seemingly the same loop they have
been reported as always playing. Full AM mode. Clear and fair, so
surely somewhere in the eastern US, or Caribbean at best. Abruptly off
at 1533. Reports have this generally popping on and off in the
1500-1700 range. Back up at 1558 with the same routine, abruptly off
about 1604. Back up 1613 but tuned out for when they went off. There
again at quick 1700 check. Almost as good as the old Yosemite Sam "I'm
gonna blow you to smithereens" mutant New Mexico government contractor
transmitter tests, but far less amusing. I suspect it's a similar
operation vs. a "true" pirate. The frequency alone stinks of
government.
9025 PIRATE/MUTANT (NORTH AMERICA) 'Presidential Pirate' 1956+ 12 FEB
2026 The usual JFK/FDR loop in AM mode, clear, fair. Off a minute
after tuning in. Back up 2007, off 2012. Back up 2022 at which point
I'm bored though equally fascinated with it, but bye-bye. Oops, 2037
back up with the radio not shut down. Occasional presumed USAF quick
digital bursts messages atop, not the same source.
9025 PIRATE/MUTANT (NORTH AMERICA) 'Presidential Pirate' 13 FEB 2026
1532 Abruptly up for a few minutes with the usual, back up at 1547.
9025 PIRATE/MUTANT (NORTH AMERICA) 'Presidential Pirate' 1513 17 FEB
2026. In progress with the usual JFK/FDR inaugural speech snips.
Backing up my theory, this is via a defense contractor, testing a
transmitter much like the New Mexico site did years ago with "Yosemite
Sam." Why? Because it was silent on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday
14/15 February, as well as Monday the 16th, a US Federal holiday
(Presidents' Day) when I'd suspect nobody was working.
9025 PIRATE/MUTANT (NORTH AMERICA) 'Presidential Pirate' 1556 18 FEB
2026. Abruptly up briefly with the standard speeches loop. Back on at
1616 briefly and 1643. Fair at best`` (via Glenn Hauser, OK, WORLD OF
RADIO 2335)
