The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
So was the Biden College Tour hot or what? I was actually a tad taken aback by Chris'
strength right out of the box...I think Biden was a bit shocked himself...Lot of buzz
coming off it...He advanced his speculation on a presidential bid down the goal
line...While downplaying his own run, he seemed to be making a strong case for any
Democrat who would challenge Bush...
And speaking of buzz, Bush's announcement on the University of Michigan admissions
policy is reigniting the debate on affirmative action, racial preferences, quotas and
all that jazz...We'll lead the show with that controversy...Ann Coulter, a University
of Michigan Law School grad and lawyer who worked on this case (Do I even have to tell
you which side she's on??) will take on Bard College's Leon Botstein who'll defend the
policy....
Hold the phone...Here's some breaking news: U.N. weapons inspectors found empty
chemical warheads during an inspection of a storage area in Iraq on Thursday, a U.N.
spokesman said in Baghdad. (MSNBC)
http://msnbc.com/news/842500.asp?0cv=CA01
Will this unleash the dogs of war? We'll talk to Oklahoma Senator Don Nickles about
it..
In the B/C blocks we'll do a Buzz with Dee Dee & Tony on the political fallout...
In the D Block we'll get into that always touchy subject of border security and the
issue of illegal immigration...Should citizens take border security in their own hands
when the federal government fails? "A Republic not an Empire" author and all around
cool dude at the office water cooler Pat Buchanan (and I mean that, Pat's the man...We
kick it free style...Now he's even got me doing the hand chops stuff) will join us
with Morris Dees, head of the Southern Poverty Law Center...
We'll go outside the box in the E/F segment with actors Mia Farrow and Brian Dennehy
who are starring in a new play "The Exonerated" now running in DC, "a new off-Broadway
work based on the real-life experiences of five American men and one woman who were
condemned to death and eventually had their convictions overturned" (The Washington
Post) http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A47882-2003Jan12.html

"I strongly support diversity of all kinds, including racial diversity in higher
education," Mr. Bush said in a nationally televised address. "But the method used by
the University of Michigan to achieve this important goal is fundamentally flawed. At
their core, the Michigan policies amount to a quota system that unfairly rewards or
penalizes prospective students based solely on their race." (The New York Times)
