SENIOR PENTAGON OFFICIAL SAYS THE TOWN OF HINDIYAH, LOCATED ON THE EUPHRATES RIVER
BETWEEN NAJAF AND KARBALA, HAS BEEN TAKEN BY A UNIT OF THE 3RD INFANTRY DIVISION.
THE OFFICIAL SAYS THIS IS THE CLOSEST THAT ANY US GROUND FORCES HAVE GOTTEN TO
BAGHDAD. HINDIYAH IS ABOUT 50 MILES FROM THE CITY. [SPECIAL OPS FORCES ARE IN
BAGHDAD, AS WE REPORTED LAST NIGHT.]
HINDIYAH WAS THE LOCATION WHERE THE FIRST APACHE HELICOPTER WENT DOWN LAST WEEK. IT
IS CONSIDERED THE FORWARD EDGE OF THE MEDINA DIVISION'S OPERATION AREA. IT IS
UNCERTAIN WHETHER THE THIRD ENGAGED THE REPUBLICAN GUARD IN HINDIYAH.

Release Number: 03-03-106
REMAINS OF FOUR U.S. MARINES RECOVERED
SOUTHERN IRAQ - As a result of recent combat operations northwest of An Nasiriyah,
four Marines from the First Marine Expeditionary Force are now listed as killed in
action. Previously, the Marines were unaccounted for and officially in a "Duty Status
and Whereabouts Unknown" category.
A preliminary investigation shows that while crossing a bridge over an Iraqi waterway
March 27, the driver of an M1A1 tank was shot and killed. The tank, with the driver
and three other crewmen, fell into the river landing upside-down. The three remaining
crewmen are believed to have drowned.
Marines and Navy Seabee personnel recovered the tank and its crewmen Sunday.
The Marines' names are being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Reports from both the Pentagon and the field indicate that combined US Special
Operations Forces and Kurdish forces are within a few miles of the city of Kirkuk, the
most important city in Kurdistan and the most important northern oil city. By some
reports, US and Kurdish forces are within 9 miles of the city and by others, within 15
miles of the city.
Moreover, those same reports indicate that the Kirkuk oilfields, located to the north
and east of the city, are under the control of US Special Operations Forces and the
CIA's Special Activities Division. The oilfields are viewed as the key strategic
target in the north
containing nearly half of Iraq's oil reserves. Kirkuk is Iraq's third largest city
and overwhelmingly Kurdish.
US officials in the area told NBC NEWS that the CIA went into the oilfields and paid
off Iraqi guards to permit the entry of Special Operations Forces. The latest weather
satellite images of the oilfields, taken over the weekend, show no fires burning in
the fields. US officials had feared that Iraqi forces would set the fields afire, but
it has not happened.
There is no plan for US troops in the area to enter the city, although Kurdish forces
may undertake special operations inside the city with the help of the CIA. Absent
collapse of Iraqi forces, the nearest US ground forces unit to Kirkuk, the 173rd
Infantry Brigade (which is now reported to have built up to a "few thousand" men), has
no chance of defeating Iraqi forces and irregulars here any time soon. A division of
the Republican Guard, the Nebuchadnezzar, is stationed near Kirkuk and has been the
subject of US bombing but no where near the level seen around Baghdad.
Overnight, senior Pentagon official told NBC News that Iraqi regular army units on the
eastern outskirts of the city--near the oilfields--were retreating into the city as
Kurdish and US forces advanced.
The senior Pentagon official said regular army units are retreating in an organized
manner into both Kirkuk and Mosul, auguring similar challenges in these, Iraq's third
and fourth largest cities.

U.S. troops engaged the Republican Guard units south of Baghdad on Monday, probing
Saddam Hussein's best-trained soldiers after days of heavy air bombardment aimed at
weakening the capital's defenders. Meanwhile, U.S. troops stepped up their battle with
Iraqi militia on the supply route toward the capital, raiding cities and towns to root
out fighters who have hampered the American advance.

Less than two weeks into the war on Iraq, President Bush's popularity ratings have
rebounded from January's lows, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
But while Americans back the president's handling of the war thus far, the survey
finds that they are are increasingly concerned about the prospect of a long engagement
in Iraq, mindful of minimizing Iraqi civilian casualties and - by a wide margin -
unsupportive of Bush's tax cut plan. (MSNBC)
