            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

Hardball airs exclusively on MSNBC at 7, 11 & 2 am et and 4, 8 & 11 pm out West..

The other day on Tim's show, RNC chairman Ed Gillepsie made a rather "Briefonian"
statement...He was referring to how he was going to watch the CA Recall: "I'm like
most other Americans, Tim, as RNC chairman, I'm limited in my role, in fact,
proscribed from doing anything. So I just throw my popcorn in the microwave and watch
it on television like everyone else" http://msnbc.com/news/963025.asp?0dm=C219V

As a loyal Briefing reader you know we've been the first and, as far as I know, the
only news outlet to recommend popping the popcorn, breaking out the TV dinner trays
with your favorite food and checking out the political action on MSNBC...In fact,
certain big news days require it and when appropriate, we make the call at The
Briefing on these types of nights...Tonight is such a night...

Tonight we lead with Senators Ted Kennedy and Rick Santorum on the big Iraq hearing in
Congress today...Wolfowitz and Meyers are up there making the case for the $87 billion
dollar package...They're facing sharp criticism...

Check out this quote from Iowa Senator Tom Harkin: "This may not be Vietnam, but boy,
it sure smells like it"....We dig the olfactory angle of politics at Hardball as you
know...

If you were watching the MSNBC simulcast of Imus in the Morning today (6-9 am et) you
heard Pat Buchanan promo James Woolsey...Pat gets a soldiers' citation for this
one...Woolsey will do the second block to give his take on the situation on Iraq and
the pre-war intel...Check out Walter Pincus' piece in the Post below for the
backgrounder

In the back half we'll go big on the Recall...A new CA Field Poll which is all the
buzz puts support for the measure at 55%...Bustamante leads on the second question
with 30%, Arnold at 25% & McClintock at 13%...Plus, Maria Shriver got shouted down by
the anti-Recall forces at a Wal-Mart when she tried to register voters...We'll show
you the tape...Plus, are women Arnold's political Achilles' Heel? We'll talk to Dem
Strategist Gail Kaufmann,

Luntz and Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown will do the Buzz on CA Recall and Bush...Jerry
also has some advice for Howard Dean on how to keep Kerry in second place...

Oh and get this, Peter Ueberroth is holding a 4 pm et in which we strongly suspect he
may pull out of the race...What's it all mean? You've got questions, we've got
answers...Tonight only on MSNBC...

Some of you liked that obscure word I used yesterday, exegetical in the
Briefing...Here's an example...

"EXEGETICAL? really! I Love it when you use those big words!!"

Briefing Subscriber

-Thank you Briefing subscriber...We try to inform and entertain around here...I figure
you could drop that term at a cocktail party and really impress your friends and
collagues...Here's what it means: It comes from exegesis which is "an explanation or
critical interpretation of a text"...In other words, it's a fancy word for "slicin'
and dicin'"

A number of you criticized my grammatical error in yesterday's shout out to Sam
Feist...Here's an example

"C'mon, Dominic, Shuster and I's????????? Shuster's and my favorite. Did you go to
public school?"

-Big deal, get off my back...Sue me...

Opinion/Editorial

How not to remember Sept. 11...We don't need flag-waving and victim tributes to
commemorate the second anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The time to commemorate the
fallen is after the war is over, and this war has barely begun. By Christopher
