------------------------------------------------------
Hardball airs tonight on MSNBC at 7p, 11p & 4a ET & 4p, 8p & 1a PT Find MSNBC on your

Chris is back from vacation tonight and I can hear him in his office now yelling about
something or another, which is always a good sign for the show...He just got back from
Africa and was describing how his family was chased by elephants or something like
that...Not my idea of a relaxing vacation but whatever floats your boat I guess...
We focus on four big things tonight: Iraq, Should we bring back the draft?, Who is
Kerry's veep pick gonna be? & who is Joe Trippi and what's his new book all about?
We begin with two members of Congress: Rangel & Dreier, two guys extremely familiar to
regular cable news viewers...Rangel's the one pushing the draft and Dreier's the one
pushing the honky dory status quo...The two are typically feisty together and with
Chris at the helm it should make for a lively discussion...
Shuster's still on vacation I believe but his reportage is not...He's got a Trippi
profile in the hopper which will tee up the book and the interview...Joe's the guy who
took Howard Dean from an asterisks to, well, you know the rest of the story...Joe's
got a new book out which explains his experience and argues that while the Dean
campaign is dead, the movement and his impact on politics is not...
Later in the show we get a campaign report from Howard who is on the road in
Pittsburgh (his hometown actually) which played host to Cheney yesterday and will play
host to Kerry tomorrow...We'll ask him about Cheney as well as the big buzz over who
Kerry will pick for the number two slot...Lots of names being thrown out there...We're
expecting the announcement sometime tomorrow or Wednesday but we've been wrong before
so don't hold your breath...
We'll then talk to Michael Meehan from the Kerry campaign & BC04's Mindy Tucker who'll
get into the veepstakes and the latest from the campaign trail...
Pls join us...

WP: Cheney a mixed blessing?...Dick Cheney's relish for the attack makes him an
effective tool for the Bush campaign, allowing it to level tough charges that will get
wide attention, while allowing the president to keep his distance. But Cheney is a
blunt instrument in an age when politics is delicately choreographed.

The Bush administration is not melting into the background in Iraq as once promised.
Instead, it is keeping its profile high in Baghdad, driven by a wobbly transition to
Iraqi self-rule and a growing disillusionment among American voters in a presidential
