            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

David Gregory is back in the saddle tonight as we delve into the first full day
of John Roberts as SCOTUS nominee...Roberts is spending the day on the Hill
meeting with key senators who will play a big role in his confirmation
process...We're also monitoring reaction from both the left and right on
Roberts which at this point is fairly tame and boilerplate as far as
confirmation battles go...That could change of course as "oppo research" folks
dig into his record and past...

We lead the show with White House chief of staff Andy Card on the pick, how,
why it was made and what impact Bush is hoping to have on The Supremes...

Senator Jon Corzine (D-NJ) will give us a flavor of the Dem response....

On other matters, a tangent to the CIA-White House leak story is the question
of whether a national "shield law" to protect journalist from giving up their
sources is needed...The proposed legislation would protect journalists from
having to choose between giving up a source and jail time...Matthew Cooper of
Time magazine, who narrowly escaped jail time himself for refusing to give up
the name of his source (Karl Rove), was one of the witnesses in support of the
legislation...We'll talk to editor-in-chief of Time Inc. Norm Pearlstine, the
man who made the decision to turn over Cooper's notes to the grand jury...He
testified on behalf of the legislation as well...

Senate considers protecting reporters....No federal law exists shielding
journalists who won't reveal sources (MSNBC)

Direct from "Da Lou": The guy who shepherded Clarence Thomas' confirmation
process on the Hill back in '91, fmr. Missouri Senator John Danforth (R) will
be here to explain the process...A role now being played by actor and former
Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN)...

Finally we'll do the political-judicial slice and dice thing with Katrina and
Terry
