The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Desperate days in the Gulf continue....Plus, are our cities doing enough to
prepare for a future disaster? Is this country living under the illusion of
security? Safety and security have been buzz words since the war on terror
began...What does the government's response (and we're talking about all
levels) to Hurricane Katrina say about our country's ability to respond to a
catastrophe? What if terrorists struck? Do you feel like you can rely on the
government?
We'll continue asking those questions as we did last night with several local
officials in our branded segment "Safeguarding America: Are We Prepared?" with
Chatham county Georgia's Emergency Management Agency's Philip Webber...Chatham
county includes Savannah, GA which is the path of Hurricane Ophelia, now
lurking dangerously off the southeastern coast...We'll also talk to Myrtle
Beach, SC mayor Mark McBride and Meyera Oberndorf, mayor Virginia Beach, VA
FEMA and its director, Michael Brown, have come under fire for mismanagement
but now a couple of pieces out there suggest his resume and those of his top
lieutenants may not be up to snuff for disaster relief...Time mag investigates
here http://www.time.com/time/nation/printout/0,8816,1103003,00.html with The
Washington Post looking more broadly at the management team of FEMA here
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9261552/ We'll dig into that story tonight with an
NBC News reporter
And now this: FEMA chief relieved of Katrina duties...Move follows controversy
over Brown's qualifications, agency's response

Andrea at the top of the show...
Legendary NBC News broadcaster and former Nightly News front man Tom Brokaw is
down in New Orleans today and we'll obviously check in with him on his
reporting..
David Shuster profiles a New Orleans police officer who has been living out of
a truck since the Hurricane hit...We'll join her as she ventures back to her
home...
Finally tonight we'll speak with John Edwards, now head of UNC-Chapel Hill's
Center on Poverty, Work, & Opportunity about poverty in America and what the
Hurricane relief efforts have shown us on the topic..
And get this...Chris is heading down to the region and will report from New
Orleans and Baton Rouge on Monday...You're not gonna want to miss that...
Please join us tonight at 5 pm & 7 pm ET....Best, Dominic Bellone
