            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

More political slicin' and dicin' to be had from the President's speech last
night as well as the latest on the recovery efforts of the Gulf Coast...We'll
talk to a leading lady of New Orleans, famed television and radio journalist,
Cokie Roberts...We'll get her sense of the tragedy, the rebuilding and the
political backlash of the situation...

We'll talk to LA state senator Cleo Fields with his reax to the President's
speech and where he sees the rebuilding headed...You'll recall Cleo was a Dem
Congressman back in the 103rd Congress ('93-'95) until he was redistricted out
of a seat in '96...He'll be joined by the mayor of Pascagoula, MS Matthew
Avara...Of course we'll get deep into the local/federal politics...I'm sensing
an impending tug of war between who's in the charge of the reconstruction power
and money..

Another big political angle is gathering resentment on the right for the
President's Katerina clean up bill...Speaking of which, you can say a lot about
the Bush presidency but you can't call him a fiscal conservative...His speech
last night made FDR and Lyndon Johnson's domestic spending look positively
Scrooge-esque! Big government at home, big government abroad, can the U.S.
afford it? Can Bush sustain and manage both the reconstruction of Iraq and the
Gulf Coast? And lets not even get started with gas prices..

David Shuster is hanging out in the French Quarter at a bar where the bartender
and his loyal patrons refuse to give in to Katrina...He'll bring us their
story..

We'll lead with a big picture assessment from Brian Williams...

Btw, Chris and Tucker had a great exchange last night...I loved this part:

Tucker: "....Keep in mind, you know, about 50 percent of the people aren`t
upset about Iraq. And they`re not upset, not because they understand why we`re
in Iraq, no one understands why we`re in Iraq except for eight guys that work
in think tanks in Washington. They trust Bush. They trust the president.
That`s why they`re working this endeavor. The second they start to lose
confidence in his ability to run a project that like that is the moment the
whole thing falls apart. And the entire country turns against Iraq. So, I
think he`s got everything riding on this not just for the short term midterms,
but because Iraq really hangs in the balance here. I just think if you
listened carefully to this speech and...

MATTHEWS: By the way, you`re speaking like my deepest soul, Tucker. That`s the
deepest thought I`ve come up with in years now, and you`ve just spoken it.
Listen, I agree with you which is this same exact war in Iraq were being run by
Madeleine Albright or some liberal, the exact same war, the conservatives in
this country would be laughing at it."

I'm gonna have to steal Tucker's line about the "eight think tank guys in
Washington!" I love it...
