            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

Another big day in Washington as President Bush hits the Rose Garden a day
after nominating Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court...White House advisor Dan
Bartlett laid the ground work for the message offensive by hitting some of the
morning shows to assure folks, particularly the base, that her credentials were
solid and that she shared the President's conservative values...

As we reported last night the base isn't entirely happy or unified...This is
not an insignificant point for those who consider themselves conservative and
see the Judiciary as the last redoubt of activist liberal judges and one of the
key reasons for having a Republican in the White House...We'll get into the
ideological divide with Pat and Ben Ginsburg, former BC04 legal advisor and now
a consultant to Progress For America, a conservative pressure group which backs
the President's pick..

We'll also sample some flavor of the Senate's reaction to the pick with George
Allen (R-VA) and Dick Durbin (D-IL)

Dionne and Kate O'Bierne drop by for a big picture political chew and spew on
Miers, the CIA-White House leak case and maybe a little DeLay action..

Finally we wrap up tonight's festivities with a former White House colleague of
Harriet Miers, a lawyer who'll testify to her values, work experience and
fitness for high office..

We thank you in advance for tuning into the broadcast...

Globe Analysis: President Bush yesterday once again backed away from an open
confrontation over the future of the Supreme Court, choosing a nominee whose
lack of a record on divisive social issues guarantees that activists on both
sides of the fierce battle over judicial nominations will be frustrated and
angry -- with the White House, and not necessarily with each other.
