The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Hardball...The president fought back today against folks who accuse
the administration of manipulating intelligence and the media to make the case
for war with Iraq...By citing "more than a hundred Democrats in the House and
the Senate, who had access to the same intelligence," and who "voted to support
removing Saddam Hussein from power" Bush seemed to give the function equivalent
of the "everyone does it" defense...
Bush also said "While it's perfectly legitimate to criticize my decisions or
the conduct of the war, it is deeply irresponsible to rewrite the history of
how that war began." The bit about "rewriting history" is curious as the
rationales for this war have shifted significantly over the last 3 years, from
an imminent nuclear threat before the war to democracy building after the war
when no WMD were found...
Also, as David Shuster reports tonight (he's been on fire this week hasn't
he?), in a flagrant rewriting of history the nonexistent 9/11 connection to
Iraq to justify the war has been trotted out time and again by Bush and his
administration despite his own administration, Congress and intelligence
experts disputing the claim...
Be that as it may we talk to fmr. RNC Chairman and Virginia Governor and
terrorism expert Jim Gilmore along with Shrum to do the politics of the
speech...We'll get highlights with Gregory from the North Lawn
We'll also talk to Stephen Hayes of The Weekly Standard who is more convinced
of the case for war with Iraq than the Bush administration, plus Chuck Todd,
editor-in-chief of Washington's "must read" publication The Hotline...
And speaking of rewriting history, Dan Rather's producer, Mary Mapes is out
flogging a new book on her career and how she was duped by folks in Texas last
year over the Bush-National Guard documents...Chris will take her on tonight...
