            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

While the Abramoff/DeLay fallout reactions continue to pile up on one side of
Capitol Hill, the other side is all about Judge Sam Alito's nomination to the
Supreme Court. That's the bicameral discussion these days in Washington, and,
tonight on Hardball, we'll get into both parts. Chris will welcome two Senate
Judiciary Committee members to get their assessment of Judge Alito's first
round of questioning today. Sen. Joe Biden (D-DE), former chairman of the
committee, and Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH), a member of the notorious Gang of 14,
will both be here.

In case you haven't been watching today, the AP has an afternoon update on the
first round of questions: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10786631/.

And Newsweek's Jonathan Darman has some thoughts today on some of the theatrics
in room 216 of the Hart Senate Office Building:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10790380/site/newsweek/.

For a discussion on the scandal-driven House leadership contests, Chris will
talk with a Republican and a Democrat who know all about what it's like to run
for a leadership position in the House and the challenges of regulating
congressional lobbying. Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX) and
former House Majority Whip Tony Coelho (D-CA) will be here to share their
thoughts on the big shake-up.

Hardball's David Shuster will have the latest on the Abramoff/DeLay fallout.
Chris also will talk with Rep. David Dreier (R-CA), whom House Speaker Dennis
Hastert (R-IL) has tasked with drafting up new lobbying reform legislation.
Also, Time's Karen Tumulty and the New York Times' Anne Kornblut will be here
to hash out the fallout. Check out Kornblut's article on Abramoff in today's
Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/10/politics/10lobbyist.html. Read a
preview of Tumulty's profile of Abramoff's rise and fall in Time here:
