The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
As the "Hardball Briefing" published, there was still no word on the fate of
kidnapped freelance journalist Jill Carroll in Iraq. Her captors had issued a
deadline expiring this afternoon to meet their demands. MSNBC has the latest
here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10895039/.
On Hardball tonight, Chris will talk with Micah Garen, a freelance journalist
who was held hostage in Iraq, and Marie-Helene Carleton, his fiancé who
negotiated his release, about their experience and how they succeeded in
freeing him.
Also today, the Bush Administration stepped up its defense of the president's
authorization of warrantless domestic surveillance of Americans with suspected
terrorist ties. Today's New York Times has more on the Justice Department's
report asserting the legality of the NSA's formerly secret domestic spying
program: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/20/politics/20nsa.html.
Attorney Dick Sauber, who specializes in national security laws related to the
Federal Intelligence Surveillance Court, will join Chris to talk about it.
FindLaw has the department's report:

Meanwhile, the Associated Press reports the president will visit the NSA soon:

Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA), the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence
Committee and a member of the Homeland Security Committee, will be here to talk
about the Democrats' charges of illegal actions by the administration and also
to offer her reaction to the bin Laden tape released yesterday.
MSNBC's Chief Washington Correspondent Norah O'Donnell will report on White
House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove's speech at today's RNC Winter Meeting
and update us on where the CIA leak investigation stands.
Plus, tonight it's the premiere of the "Hardball HotShots": Rita Cosby, Tucker
Carlson, and Joe Scarborough. The trio of MSNBC hosts will tell Chris what they
thought were the most unforgettable and unbelievable stories of the week. You
don't want to miss it!
