The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
The ports storm continues to rain on Washington. Scott McClellan, spokesman for
the president, told reporters today that the president didn't know about the
deal to allow a company run by the United Arab Emirates to take control of six
U.S. ports until after it was approved by his administration. The president has
threatened to veto any legislation to thwart the deal.
Tonight on Hardball at 7 p.m. Eastern, Chris will run through all the latest on
this, starting with Rep. Peter King (R-NY), chairman of the House Homeland
Security Committee, who plans to offer an emergency bill to suspend the ports
deal. Read the latest from MSNBC.com: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11494815/.
Hardball's David Shuster will report on today's developments and former
Nixon/Ford/Reagan/Clinton advisor David "Four Administrations" Gergen will join
Chris to discuss the politics going on within the White House.
Former DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe also will be here to talk about how and why
Democrats are lining up with leading Republicans to oppose the port deal. On
the flip side of the political scene, MSNBC Chief Washington Correspondent
Norah O'Donnell will tell Chris about some bad blood between the president and
his fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill.
Plus, Jayson Ahern, assistant commissioner for field operations at U.S. Customs
and Border Protection, and Rear Adm. Thomas Gilmour of the U.S. Coast Guard
will be here to talk about the federal government's security procedures and
plans for our ports.
For more on the politics of the deal, Chris will talk with Hardball Political
Analyst Bob Shrum and Ed Rogers, former advisor to President George H.W. Bush.
Shrum and Rogers will also discuss the latest in the CIA Leak investigation and
Scooter Libby's defense. If you haven't seen it yet, here's the site for
Libby's defense fund: http://www.scooterlibby.com/.
And you won't want to miss the end of the show because Sen. Rick Santorum
(R-PA), chair of the Senate Republican Conference, will join Chris from
Philadelphia -- one of the six cities involved in the port fight. He has called
on the president to quash the port deal. Will it happen?
