            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

For the second time in 2006, President Bush waded into the Brady Press Briefing
Room at the White House to field questions from the press corps. Iraq dominated
the questions of course, and the president vigorously asserted his confidence
in Iraq's future, noting that he expected "more tough fighting ahead," and
dismissed suggestions that his White House team needs new blood. Here's the
AP's report on it all: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11941620/.

Chris will be live from San Francisco again for Hardball tonight! Two major
California pols will be on the show: Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and San
Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Feinstein is making waves calling for the removal
of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. Feinstein's colleague Sen. Barbara Boxer
(D-CA) has signed on to co-sponsor the measure to censure President Bush for
authorizing the NSA's once-secret domestic wiretapping program, but does
Feinstein plan to do the same? Also, coincidentally enough, one of the
questions in today's White House press conference had to do with Newsom's
decision to authorize same-sex marriages in the city. Responding to that,
President Bush said, "I believe society's interests are met by defining
marriage as between a man and a woman." Chris will ask Newsom about that issue,
the party battles in the culture wars, and how local governments like his are
handling the federal government these days.

Joining Chris to process the president's presser will be former
Nixon/Ford/Reagan/Clinton White House adviser David "Four Administrations"
Gergen, MSNBC Political Analyst Pat Buchanan, and former San Francisco Mayor
Willie Brown. Plus, Stephen Hayes, senior writer for the Weekly Standard, and
Margaret Carlson, Bloomberg News columnist and editor of The Week, will be here
to talk about the president's performance today, the upcoming midterm
elections, and developments in the 2008 presidential prospects field.
