            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

Tonight on Hardball, as President Bush prepares to address the world at the
U.N. General Assembly, Chris talks with Karen Hughes, Undersecretary of State
for public diplomacy and public affairs (and longtime Bush adviser), about
Iraq, Iran, terrorism, and much more. AP has the latest:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14888490/.

As the president talks with world leaders, there's still no resolution in the
fight between the Bush Administration and Republican senators on the proposed
rules for handling suspected terrorists. Columnists Margaret Carlson of
Bloomberg News and John Fund of Opinion Journal.com will join Chris to talk
about that battle and whether there's a compromise on the way.

MSNBC Chief Washington Correspondent Norah O'Donnell will report on Virginia's
U.S. Senate race in the first in a series on the Hardball Senate Six-Pack. Can
Democrats pick up six seats by knocking out Republican incumbents? Each week,
Norah will report on one of the races where Democrats are hoping to do it. NBC
Political Analyst Charlie Cook, publisher of the Cook Political Report, and
MSNBC Political Analyst Howard Fineman, chief political correspondent for
Newsweek, will be here to talk about Virginia and all of the latest news in the
hot Senate races. If you missed the Allen-Webb debate on Sunday's "Meet the
Press," then check it out: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032608/.

Plus, Hardball's David Shuster will have more on the president's effort to win
a diplomatic battle at the U.N. Jerry Brown, the mayor of Oakland, California,
and candidate for state attorney general, and Vanity Fair's Christopher
Hitchens will talk about the diplomatic politics playing out in New York and
D.C.

Hardball sends a special shout-out to former intern Alex Dresner, who offers
insight in this week's BusinessWeek on U.S. students studying abroad:
