The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
How close are we to bringing U.S. troops home? The Iraq Study Group, due to
release their report next week, plans to recommend nearly all combat troops be
redeployed by early 2008, if conditions are favorable. Tonight on Hardball,
we'll be joined by MSNBC Military Analyst Gen. Barry McCaffrey (Ret.) and
former White House Adviser David Gergen to talk about what lies ahead in Iraq.
For the latest, go to www.politics.msnbc.com.
Bush is scheduled to hold separate talks with Shiite and Sunni leaders,
starting next week (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15989120/). We'll continue the
Iraq discussion with Dana Milbank from the Washington Post and John Harwood,
CNBC Chief Political Correspondent and Wall Street Journal Political Editor.
What will the results be from this week's meeting between Bush and Iraqi Prime
Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Jordan? Is there a connection between the reported
Iraq Study Group's '08 deadline for troop pullout and the '08 presidential
primary, and what effect will Iraq have when Americans pick the next president?
Later in the show, how will the conflict in Iraq effect the President's second
term - and his legacy? We'll talk to NBC Presidential Historian Michael
Beschloss about this president and the next White House occupant.
One potential '08 presidential candidate - Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) - spoke
today at the second annual Global Summit on AIDS and the Church, held at Rick
Warren's Saddleback Church, and is scheduled this evening for the "The Tonight
Show with Jay Leno." Is a presidential campaign announcement on the way?
We'll get a report on Obama and today's Saddleback visit, which also included
an HIV test, from NBC's George Lewis. Check out today's HotSoup: Obama church
visit follows Dems' exurbia gains http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15985168/.
And we'll end this Washington week with the Hardballers. MSNBC Political
Analyst Ron Reagan and Kate O'Beirne from National Review will dig through all
the biggest news of the week, including Iraq, the new Congress and what's on
the table as we start the last month of 2006.
