            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
Before leaving the capitol for a weekend on the Bush family compound in Maine,
the president held a press conference this morning where he discussed his
rationale for continuing to support the war in Iraq. President Bush: "I
recognize some don't view it as an ideological struggle, but I firmly believe
it is an ideological struggle. And I believe it's a struggle between the forces
of moderation and reasonableness and good and the forces of murder and
intolerance."

We'll have the latest tonight from Hardball Correspondent David Shuster and NBC
News Political Director Chuck Todd. Is the president's faith in the Iraq
mission unshakeable? Or will three weeks on the Texas ranch, where Bush is
heading after his weekend in New England, and a new report from Gen. Petraeus
in September bring a change in course? We'll talk about what happens next with
former Bush-Cheney aide Ron Christie, and later in the show, Ezra Klein from
The American Prospect and Republican consultant Karen Hanretty.

Then, Chris will have the details on all the hot political news. Setting off a
ripple effect that could leave the country voting on 2008 candidates while the
calendar still says 2007, the Republican presidential primary in South Carolina
is being pushed forward to January 19. And for the third time in six days,
Democratic presidential candidates will gather to debate. This time the issue
is gay rights at a first-of-its-kind presidential forum.

Frank Sinatra sang about love and marriage, but what happens when you throw
politics into the mix? That's tonight's Hardball Debate with writer and social
activist Rev. Marcia Dyson and her husband Michael Eric Dyson, author of the
new book, "Know What I Mean?" She likes Hillary. He likes Obama. How many
campaign signs can one front yard hold?

And get ready for all the Decision '08 scoop from tonight's Hardball Panel:
field team edition. Salon's Joan Walsh will have the latest from the west
coast, washingtonpost.com's Chris Cillizza is covering the campaign trail in
Iowa, and Michael Fletcher, White House Reporter for the Washington Post,
checks in from the National Association of Black Journalists Convention in Las
Vegas.
