The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------
First up - Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed Chair Ben Bernanke got an
earful today from Senators as they tried to convince Congress to approve the
emergency bailout for Wall Street. Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) came out swinging,
saying the administration's $700 billion bailout proposal was "not acceptable."
At today's hearing, Sen. John Tester (D-MT) said, "You guys are a lot smarter
in financials than I am. I'm a dirt farmer. You guys have been in the business
... Why do we have one week to determine $700 billion that has to be
appropriated or this country's financial systems go down the pipes?" Did he get
an answer? Find out on tonight's show when Chris interviews Sen. Tester. We'll
also talk to the top ranking Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, Sen.
Richard Shelby who said "we've got to have some alternatives" to the
administration's bailout plan.
Next - where do we go from here? Even if Congress passes the bailout package,
will that solve the problem? Who pays? Where does the money come from?
Washington Post columnist Steven Pearlstein and CNBC's Jim Cramer will break
down the crisis for you.
And you knew it was only a matter of time. First Joe Biden said he didn't
approve of an ad Obama that mocked McCain, then said well, let me rephrase
that. We'll have that on the Hardball Sideshow.
Plus - we'll talk to the Hardball Strategists: Democrat Steve McMahon and
Republican Todd Harris. Is there a bailout bounce? New polls suggest Obama is
getting a boost just days before the first debate.
Be sure to watch "Hardball with Chris Matthews" every night at 5 and 7 Eastern.
