            The Hardball Briefing On MSNBC
------------------------------------------------------

First up: back in the cabinet again!

Today President-elect Barack Obama announced the appointment of Bill Richardson
as Secretary of Commerce. That's the third cabinet level post for the New
Mexico Governor who had previously been rumored for Secretary of State. So is
the post a consolation prize for losing out to Hillary Clinton? And since
Richardson sided with Obama instead of Clinton during the primaries, will the
rumored tension between the new secretaries create conflict? We'll ask the
Chicago Tribune's Clarence Page and WashingtonPost.com's Chris Cillizza to
weigh in.

Then, inheritance tax: most experts agree that Obama is set to inherit an
economic crisis of historical proportions. The president-elect has proved that
he values experience more than party ties with his newly assembled economic
team. So which way will Obama move and how far will he go to get things done?
We'll get Paul Krugman's take on the 44th president's plan.

Plus, Tricky Dick on tape! Newly released White House tapes from Richard
Nixon's administration show he's still "the one" who keeps providing stunning
surprises nearly 14 years after his death and 34 years after his impeachment
and resignation. What do the tapes reveal about that tumultuous time that ended
the Vietnam War? And what heated words did President Nixon have for the press
and his enemies? MSNBC Contributor Jim Warren and Washington Post Columnist
Richard Cohen will be here to discuss.

And in the Politics Fix: the brothers Bush are in the news again! President
Bush gave his first in a series of exit interviews where he admitted his
greatest regret. While his departure will please some critics, there might be
one Bush still on the national political field: Governor Jeb Bush who's
considering running for Senate in 2010. We'll get reactions from MSNBC
Political Analyst Michelle Bernard and Salon's Joan Walsh.

And missing beards, smelly tourists, and private reflection - all that and more
in the Hardball Sideshow.
