Rick,
I'm sure somebody's put Linux on a Dell, but I believe your friend should at
least look at IBM's.  Dell is an Intel/Windows-centric company where IBM
is more Linux friendly.  I've never had trouble putting Linux on an IBM
Laptop.
 
Something to consider: for a wireless Access Point, your friend (and anyone
else) should consider Apple's Airport Express.  It is a wireless Access Point
AND a wireless print server, with a USB port for the printer.  And it is
VERY compact - just about palm-sized - great for travel.  It is standard 11g
and 11b, so it should work with any standard 11g/11b client.
