Some network clients do not function properly with SSID broadcast turned off. I have seen this with at least two vendor products. The use of encryption is essential (WPA is preferred over WEP, though any is better than none). MAC address filtering is also advisable. This allows you to restrict who can connect by Ethernet address.

If you do that make sure you use a name the would be hard to guess like alphadec.(smile) You can do this to your home system also, which would keep you neighbors out. Linux has squid which is a firewall and there is EZArmor and Kerio are free windows firewalls.
