Along those same lines, wouldn't it be ironic (maybe smart) if some WorldVistA member or group of members would apply to a grant from Gates Foundation. I understand the request process there is reasonable, not onerous. The premise would be to prove open source software was a cost effective solution for improving healthcare in places that can't afford expensive operating systems. I am certain they would consider it seriously because they are funding "proof of concept" types of grants, and what this group is doing makes a lot of sense. I could see a grant like that being used to staff the large project of internationalization of the dialogue file. IMHO disclosure is only half of the issue, while it is the literal interpretation of open source... it is only part of the picture. The equally if not more important part is contribution to the common code base via collaborative innovation etc. .... that is where the strategic value of open source is for health care systems and the leverage to improve health outcomes. This speaks to the core business of health care and VistA's adopters which is improving health outcomes. IP protection and comptetitive advantage etc. while important are secondary objectives.. The research and projects I have done for the Canadian federal gov't and European Commission strongly support the notion that the real innovation and power of open source is to be the designer of the "earthquake" not the victim. What this takes is alligning the license with the core mission of health care and at the same time creating innovative business models that work harmoniously with this reality....anything else will compromise improvement in health care and is IMHO indicative of a lack of "out of the box" thinking and capability on the part of those who think they are open source companies.
