Hardhats, if you haven't gotten signed up for the vista-open-source list, you had better do it. I just did it and what is happening there is important. You may not agree with me, but I suggest you sign up and voice your opinion. You don't have to be a WV member to care about this.
******************************************* These anti open souce arguments are just a cutsie ways of getting vendor lock-in and there has not been a single thing that has been said up until now that has made me more ANGRY or more convinced that every line of code added by anyone who cares about this issue needs to be GPLed. How can we tout the open source nature of VistA and then say we won't give the users the source?! I understand the arguments that the code should not be tampered with by the inexperienced, are, but I do not buy that that should be prevented. You tell the docs that if they tinker, they loose their warrantee or whatever when you give them the system. You do not close the source. MD5SUMs are easy enough to generate and check. I suspect someone can write a script to do that in under an hour, maybe even me. I don't think any physician who is smart enough to know what open source is is going to buy into this argument. After all, one of the BIG pluses of the open source model is that you can switch vendors if you are not happy with your vendor. Linux has proprietary packages that run on it, so if you have a proprietary package with bells and whistles, figure out how to make that run with its source closed if you think you must, but don't monkey with the open source core model that gives the open source community life. ------------------------------------------------------- -- Nancy Anthracite ------------------------------------------------------- SF email is sponsored by - The IT Product Guide Read honest & candid reviews on hundreds of IT Products from real users.
