Hi,
I have relatives in Penang Island hit by the tidal
waves, which happens to be the only source of concern
as the latest BBC news reported 64 drowned.

However most of inhabitants on the island live on the
east side facing the mainland. Also the contour of
ridges towards earth fault lines are such that they
rise and fold tremendously (a geological truth) and
thus allows less inhabitants (of course unless they
cut down the montains and made homes to catch the
sunset). Prolonging the geological truth, land further
away will lose the ridge effect and thus has flatter
land where the sea will communicate devastatingly over
an optimal distance.

The holiday makers are mostly on the northern Batu
Feringhi side and again the fortunate angle away from
the epicentre. My inlaws are further towards the
epicentre along the northen part of the island but its
a bay with a high deflecting tip on the west.

However my inlaws reported that further eastern tips
took a heavy hit as the waves must have curved towards
land after deflecting the straight shores.

The closest but sharp Acheh tip of Sumatera took the
brunt by blocking the highest angle of origin.

A more popular northen resort island that borders with
Thailand which is Langkawi which should be in direct
line of approach of the tsunami seems quiet (strange
and we still need confirmation). I know the popular
Berjaya Beach among others are more directly facing
the epicentre.
