I think the IBM and Microsoft combo is a great duo.  They've been
working with the XML and W3C specs to fledge out the specs for transport
and security.

Most everyone has this gagging reflex when they hear the words
"Microsoft" and "standard" in the same sentence but you really shouldn't
be so quick to judge.

They did help create XML back in July 1996.  Yes, 1996!  Man, almost 10
years of XML.

I'm betting (with MS, IBM, and Oracle) that the system will use XML Web
Services and they'll all create easy-to-use kits for their related
Development Tools (MS = .NET and the other two will be Java based).

I agree that big is often bad (from my perspective). 
But I think that they are better than the "other" big
player (Microsoft).  I would feel as safe with a
Microsoft Office Chart as I would installing Microsoft
Wallet on my computer.

But someone somehow has to get conformity going. 
Sometimes this requires marketing muscle, sometimes it
just means innovation (like HTML and Netscape).
