HL7 is untertaking a project to create a master set of data elements, derived from the RIM and synchronized with the current terminology efforts. We believe that such a set is essential to semantic interoperability. Such a master set can be used as a basis for query among independent sites, to create minimum data sets for defined purposes, to create dynamic categories of data to collect, etc. The master set will be freely available and may be down loaded selective ly for use. We will ultimately develop a set of tools to make dealing with these elements as straight forward as possible.
I visited NCI recently and I am impressed with what they have accomplished in creating focused set of data elements. They are willing to share that work with us. As a next step, I propose asking any of you who have access to a set of data elements used in your systems to provide a copy of the data elements they be used to build the master set. I and others will use these elements for a first pass at the master set. We will add attributes consistent with RIM, ISO 11179 and NCI as well as some other things that come to mind. We will enter these data elements into the caDSR, tagged as HL7 items. NCI has tools to browse, compare the master set with local sets, extraction tools, tools to creat forms for data collection, and some other features. After entering and refining the master set, we will invite people to respond to this approach . Then we will ask people to map their local data sets to the master sets to make sure we are totally inclusive. These activities will als o give us a chance to evaluate the tolls sets available.
If you are not the person who can provide the data set, please pass this along to that person. I will accept the date element sets in any form and with any constraints.
