I thought this aarticle/report was interesting, in particular for its
emphasis on clinical vs. administrative computing, recommended
priorities for implementing a (an?) HIS, and criticism of HL7 for its
basic producer/consumer model. Though I'm not sure that I'm ready to
say that CORBA is  a better option, I agree that HL7 can be very
limiting when trying to build truly integrated systems as we've come to
expect. I've done some work on achieving integration through HL7
mechanisms like queries and notifications, but I agree that the basic
"messaging" paradigm is weaker than it need be.
