I think most people are surprised at how much in VistA depends on Taskman. Without it, there is simply no background processing of any kind. That doesn't just mean no scheduled options (like cron jobs), but no network interfaces and, well, you get the idea. There is a JOB command in MUMPS, but applications are not allowed to use it. There are various reasons for this, perhaps the biggest of which is that VistA uses a thread pooling strategy to keep the number of concurrent tasks under control, reducing license costs and improving performance.
