Do you mean drivers for Linux or Windows XP? A friend recently bought a
Dell laptop with Windows XP and found that the Windows drivers were not
yet ready. Tech support (I don't know whether Microsoft or Dell) made
him reinstall the operating system before admitting that it was known
that the display driver had known problems. He returned it (and then
took a job with Microsoft - go figure!).

I have successfully installed several releases of several Linux
distributions on my Dell Latitude C640.

It boils down to which laptop model and which operating system. For
Linux, check out http://tuxmobil.org/dell.html

To check out hardware compatibility with Linux, download the Knoppix
live CD from http://knopper.net or an OpenVistA VivA FOIA Gold live DVD
from Source Forge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/worldvista). If it
boots successfully and things work as advertised, you can install Linux
from the CD/DVD to your hard drive. If things don't work to your
satisfaction, shut down and eject the CD/DVD and your laptop will be
unchanged - i.e., the hard drive will be untouched.

Good luck.
