Ismet -- Thanx for the comments (and your enthusiastic support of VistA).
I agree that making .deb (or .rpm - since they are convertible) packages would have value, and I have thought about it. Here is what has held me back: once you have a running VistA system, from what folks like Cameron have said, KIDS appears to be a much smoother way of keeping VistA current.
