Thanks for the list of live CDs, Mark.  I'll look at them.

Apropos your comments.  It is not possible for paths to the database to
be defined a priori, and this is prompted for, but everything else is
indeed predefined.  Your comments make me wonder whether you had a
chance to try the OpenVistA VivA live CD/DVD the way it was intended to
be used:

1. Start a shell.
2. Mount the r/w storage (e.g., mount /mnt/sda1 if it is a USB flash
drive that is mapped as /dev/sda1).
3. Execute /usr/local/OpenVistA/vista

The last is a script that will prompt you (a) whether you want to
install the database (copy from the zipped copy) or run an existing
database, and (b) the location of that database.

Please let me know your comments if you try it this way.  The intent is
that the *only* "hard" part of getting to VistA is knowing where the r/w
storage is for the database.

(Of course, once you get to VistA, the fun begins...)
