Configuration has two aspects. One is technologic and the other is Conceptual content. For the Disaster Response mission it may be possible to get a generally configured system that contains both the needed terminologies for defined VistA data structures and also referential data (e.g. lab test names since CPT, LOINC, SNOMED may be local colloquial vernacular). As the ONCHIT NHIN effort becomes more widespread some of thes issues may be resolved but this particular response effort may also provide very useful information. The VistA Community should devote a specific forum to these issues and see how specificly configured architectures have been able to respond. The experiance will point to those architectural elements that may need attention in any case. But that status should give a huge head start to wahtever team may be using the common "Disaster-response Configuration".

My question was rhetorical. I understand that configuration is a complex task TODAY. But does it have to be as complex a process as it is now? It has been suggested that this is the price we pay for using highly capable software, but I don't think this is the case. Now, making software like VistA easy to install and configure is surely a daunting, but not an impossible task.

A big question in my mind is whether VistA can be deployed easily enough to be of use in a crisis situation. A slogan I've heard over and over on this list is "VistA is not plug and play". My response, of course, is: Why not?

The big issue is not the technology but rather the configuration for the mission. Those who have already responded shoiuld be able to documnte those key issues following dealing with Katrina and the properties of the needed configuration(s) could be documented. That would enable an appropriate architecture to be prepared and kept so that it could be effectively deployed by desginated organizational elements. This should be a followup activity of Katrina and an established project for WV.
