The point of the NPR story was that while "The city was forced to cancel an
estimated $3.5 billion worth of events" the hotel / convention / entertainment
infrastructure all escaped relatively intact and is (or will soon be) ready to
go back to work.

It might also be a way to find a venue with maximum willingness to be flexible
with size of group, ability to accomadate us in a single hotel, etc. By the
end of January we should have no problem with things like communications.
