I put it in as it cannot hurt it would seem. In this case, I have
prechecked to make sure the node does not exist, so it is never going to
find a match.

Right. But without it, you're (trying to) add an entry unconditionally.
Depending on how the file is set up, you may get a duplicate or an error.
The semantics of "?+" are essentially the same as LAYGO in Classic
Fileman.
