Are you certain that fsck didn't run automatically? I know that on at least some systems I've used, if you don't shut down cleanly, a file system check will be performed as part of the boot process (with no intervention on your part). Also, it was about 15 years ago that I had to do this manually. OS X has a disk utilities tool (with a nice GUI), and I guess I just assumed Linux would have something similar.
