I have found some files that have a "variable pointer"
VPE lists a series of files this pointer could point to.
Regular pointers are stored simply as the IEN (or record)#. But a
variable pointer would also need to specify which file it is point to,
right?

How is this stored?

An example variable pointer is field .04 (FINDING ITEM) of subfile
810.31 (EXTRACT FINDINGS) in parent file 810.3 (REMINDER EXTRACT
SUMMARY)

The prefix for each file is stored in the DD, so you can look it up easily enough. The values are typically something like "XYZ(;123" (if my memory serves me correctly).

What are you up to?
