Just as an aside, you may wonder why a device setup like this isn't
there already. One reason is in the VA, VistA is normally run on top of
VMS, and VMS has an interesting feature: file versioning. for example,
you might see

ISC2A1 $ dir login.com;*

Directory USER$:[WOODHOUSE]

LOGIN.COM;34 LOGIN.COM;33 LOGIN.COM;32
LOGIN.COM;31
LOGIN.COM;30 LOGIN.COM;29 LOGIN.COM;28
LOGIN.COM;27
LOGIN.COM;26 LOGIN.COM;25 LOGIN.COM;24
LOGIN.COM;23
LOGIN.COM;22 LOGIN.COM;21 LOGIN.COM;20
LOGIN.COM;19
LOGIN.COM;18 LOGIN.COM;17 LOGIN.COM;16
LOGIN.COM;15

Total of 20 files.
ISC2A1 $

(Yes, it is possible to use a more modest version limit like 4, but in
a development environment, I tend to like to keep more versions than
that around.)
