I was using the GNOME Terminal and hitting F1 brought up the GNOME Terminal Help. Upon your comment I tried using xterm and F1 works as PF1. I will also take a look at the video tutorials. After playing with GNOME Terminal for a bit I also discovered that disabling the default keyboard shortcut for GNOME Terminal Help allows F1 to work as PF1
