Yeah, the "lazy" aspect of simply omiting parameters bothered me at
first.  Then I realized that many other "modern" languages allow for
defining variables that have default values.  And M is apparently no
different.  Also, the ability to pass or omit parameters is consistent
with the differientation in M between empty values (i.e. $Data(x)=0)
and values containing "" (I guess these would be called NULL values). 
It still passes the variable, but it may not be passing an actual
variable.
