Right.
Jim was not having a problem with his user setup. If it was that
he would never have gotten to the device prompt in the LOAD option.
There clearly is a problem with the user setup, but as you note,
that's not the problem here.
The %ZISH utility does not require any device to be defined in the
DEVICE file.
There was a time when there were no %ZISH routines and the only
(supported) way to work with host files was with the HFS device. The
DEVICE file serves to abstract from specific devices and platform
specific details of how you work with those devices, providing a
common interface for pretty much all devices. Since then, utility
routines have been added to simplify working with host files and TCP/
IP connections. Perhaps if KIDS were developed today it would just
use %ZISH, but it does not. I realize most of you know this: it's
just some background that may help to clarify things a bit.
