You're right. I was unsure whether placing a function call withing one of the parameter slots for a call to the same function would cause a problem, so I tried setting the parameter to S and passing that value. I know this shouldn't be necessary, but I wanted to compare the results to convince myself that the correct parameter passing discipline was used. I neglected to trim the code.
