My reference to open source was only because I understood the VA was 
considering some application servers that were not open source, so I did not 
want folks to think there was no open source alternative.

JBoss is open source, too.

I don't know whether it is needed or not, but kind of suspect it is.
It's all a bit confusing, and I don't know if anyone's actually tried
to assemble the pieces for an open source solution. The basic
difference between JBoss and Spring is that JBoss uses EJB and Spring
uses ordinary beans. I do know that Spring is gaining in popularity
because it's a conceptually simpler, lighter weight solution.
