My reference to open source was only because I understood the VA was considering some application servers that were not open source, so I did not want folks to think there was no open source alternative.

It's all a bit confusing, and I don't know if anyone's actually tried to assemble the pieces for an open source solution. The basic difference between JBoss and Spring is that JBoss uses EJB and Spring uses ordinary beans.
