Just for my understanding, is it theoretically possible to figure out where all those points are by following the trail forward and backward, i.e. , looking for everything that points to or is pointed to by the institution file - like following all the lines in the Entity Relationship Diagrams?

I am sure there is a way of correctly saying what I am trying to ask here ...

I suppose so, but it's rather like the Y2K problem: On the surface, changing dates from 2 digits to 4 sounds like a simple thing, but once you start chasing through the dependencies, it rapidly becomes obvious that the problem is much more complicated. Worse, not all the dependencies are statically detectable, but have to do with links created (and torn down) dynamically (or at run time). There is a lot you can do, but it's not just a matter of writing a program (even a complex one) that can run through the code base and identify all the interaction points. It also depends on how you plan on using VistA and what capabilities you need.
