hui LAUNCHES INITIAL RELEASEOF VISTA TRAINING PROGRAM CURRICULA

The Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui (“Hui”) announced the release of the
VistA Institute curricula, a VistA training and certification program. The
Hui has made the curricula freely available for downloading on the Hui’s web
site at www.pacifichui.org.
In 2005, the Hui partnered with the University of Hawaii and VistA subject
matter experts throughout the continental U.S. to develop a VistA training
and certification curricula for clinical application coordinators and system
administrators.
“The VistA Institute curricula will serve as a resource to enhance the
technical and clinical competency needed to implement, support and encourage
adoption of VistA in the healthcare market worldwide,” explained Hui Director
Stanley M. Saiki, Jr., M.D.
VistA is a robust, enterprise-wide health information used by the Department
of Veterans Affairs and made available to the public through the Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA). Described as ‘one of the best healthcare information
systems in the nation’ by the Institute of Medicine, the VistA technology
been honed over two decades and is used to support the clinical, financial
and administrative needs of the VA’s network of 1,300 healthcare facilities,
including 160 medical centers.
In 2003 the Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui developed and released Hui
OpenVista™, an open source, nonproprietary version of the FOIA VistA that
runs on Linux and utilizes a nonproprietary database management system
developed by Sanchez Computer Associates of Fidelity Information Systems.
Hui OpenVista has attracted widespread interest from healthcare and medical
research organizations as well as technology companies and software
developers worldwide.
The Hui is collaborating with government and the private sector to
address
the critical need for skilled VistA programmers and clinical application
specialists in the healthcare industry. Through the VistA Institute, the Hui
is working to establish a VistA resource center to enable distance learning
of the application and increase the proficiency of VistA adopters globally.
The Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui was formed in 1999 with the
encouragement and support of U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye. A subsidiary of
the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC) under the
U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command, the Hui facilitates
interdisciplinary research partnerships with government, academia and
industry to advance the development of emerging technologies and improve
health care for beneficiaries in the Pacific region.
