Here's my understanding of VMWare. VMWare runs as a virtual machine on top of your existing OS. This virtual machine can then run a different OS.
So you could have the following. Windows XP as your OS, which runs VMWare as an app. Inside VMWare, there is an image of linux running (which may in turn run GT.M). There is no need for partition magic or anything of the sort, because VMWare interprets and handles all of the OS calls that your linux image uses. VMWare will also reach out to the host OS (Windows XP in our example) for access to devices, or for port forwarding (so you could ssh to your windows box's IP, but have that port automatically forwarded internally to your VMWare virtual machine and handled by your linux image).
I believe VMWare produces an enterprise level product that runs directly on your server's hardware, but you'd probably have to pay through the nose for it. VMWare Player (which can run an existing image) is free for download and use, and I believe they have pre-configured linux images free for download as well.
There is a pretty good Wiki entry for VMWare here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VMware
