While Mailman on Source Forge now appears to be in a state of
convalescence, I wonder if the time has come to move the hardhats
mailing list to a host better able to accommodate it, in this case the
vista group at Google groups. You can access the group via the web at
http://groups.google.com/group/vista, you can post to it (as a
protection against spam, it is currently setup to allow posts from
members only), and you can have receive posts via email, as well as RSS
and atom feeds. It is clear that Google groups has improved
considerably since we looked at alternatives for the hardhats list two
years ago.
Benefits of a Google group
- More ways to post and receive (Source Forge Mailman allows posting
only via e-mail; vs. both e-mail and web for Google groups)
- Better search capability (Source Forge searching vs. Google groups
searching is like a Yugo vs. a Lexus)
- As a Google group, VistA will be more visible to the world (some
2/3 of Microsoft employees survery admitted that Google was their first
and preferred search engine)
Benefits of Source Forge Mailman
- Source Forge Mailman is where people are right now, and we will
likely lose some of the less active folks when we move. [Some of us
will certainly continue to monitor the forum and let people know to move
whenever they post.]
Note that the whether or not we can move the Source Forge Mailman
archives to Google groups should not be a consideration, because the
existing Source Forge archives will remain and continue to be available.
