The whole problem seems to have come from orphaned processes left
running, possibly during a power failure from the storms here while I
was away. When I rebooted, which killed the orphans (that sounded like a
cruel act!), deleted my network card and rebooted again (necessary? to
restore entwork connection, for some reason), everything: VPE, logins
etc. worked fine.

However, when I finally got into IB Billing, it looks like the package
doesn't pick up DX and Procedure codes automatically, but needs to have
each bill generated manually. If anyone know otherwise, please advise.
