VA collects race and ethnicity information based on requirements imposed by bureaucracies in both the legislative and executive branches. As Nancy indicates, the VA "approved" values are no where near as comprehensive as the HL7 domains.
VA collects races of the following values: AMERICAN INDIAN OR ALASKA NATIVE ASIAN ASIAN OR PACIFIC ISLANDER BLACK OR AFRICAN AMERICAN BLACK, NOT OF HISPANIC ORIGIN DECLINED TO ANSWER HISPANIC, BLACK HISPANIC, WHITE NATIVE HAWAIIAN OR OTHER PACIFIC ISLANDER UNKNOWN UNKNOWN BY PATIENT WHITE WHITE, NOT OF HISPANIC ORIGIN Note that you may have more than one "race". And "collection method" may be: OBSERVER PROXY SELF IDENTIFICATION UNKNOWN And the following Ethnicities: DECLINED TO ANSWER HISPANIC OR LATINO NOT HISPANIC OR LATINO UNKNOWN BY PATIENT -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nancy Anthracite Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2006 4:56 PM To: hardhats-members@lists.sourceforge.net Subject: Re: [Hardhats-members] Race and Ethnicity What I have seen of that file, it is not a good example. I think you might find what you need in the ASTM standards or the HL7 standards. Arden, we need you here! Do you know where in VistA are the data for race and ethnicity stored? Do you think Vista makes a good work in collecting those data? For what we have seen in the group, even defining race and ethnicity is not easy, and capturing the necessary information to classify race and ethnicity for each patients is even more difficult. The proper collection of that data is mandatory in order to assess quality control, cultural competence, health disparities, etc. I would like to hear your thoughts. ==================================== Alberto Odor, M.D. Visiting Assistant Professor UC Davis Medical Center Clinical Research Investigator Services Program 2921 Stockton Blvd., Suite 1400 Sacramento, CA 95817 Tel: 916-703-9198 Fax: 916-703-9124 ==================================== -- Nancy Anthracite ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
