Does anyone know what is field VA PRINT NAME in File VA PRODUCT (50.68) used for?
This field (5) is restricted to 40 characters in length, while the .01 field NAME is allowed to be 64 characters. I am having a hard time shorting the names I import from the FDA database to fit in just 40 chars.. This is because the pattern of names for the .01 field is: GENERIC NAME (TRADE NAME) STRENGTH UNITS and if there are multiple ingredients, then the GENERIC name is a list of all the ingredients, e.g. ACETIC ACID/HYDROCORTISONE (OTOSOL HC) Well, it doesn't take much to reach 64 characters with this. My first approach was to use dots '...' to shorten the text, but this doesn't always work and key distinguishing parts of the name can get cut off. So I am now writing code to look for words that can be abbreviated and do this automatically if possible. But it is still hard to get down to 40 characters without just cutting information out of the name. So my real question is, is this name somehow used when printing out prescriptions?
