I assume it is a recent (last 2000 years) development, since it is not
documented in the Torah. For justification, only a very vague reference
to the Torah is given.
It is interesting that Jesus spoke out against public or ritualized prayers,
and stated that praying should be done privately in one's closet, behind a closed door: Matthew 6:5-7.

I don't recall any account in the Old Testament about Abraham engaging in any such 'salaat' ritual. The Koran is a much later document, thus having less historical significance as far as documenting Abraham's timeframe.
